3. Subject Combinations & Eligibility

Check if you meet the criteria to choose your subject combination, including eligibility requirements, pre-requisites, and merit-based allocation rules.

Subject Combinations

Students must fulfil the stated subject combination eligibility criteria, subject pre-requisites or possess the assumed knowledge in order to offer the respective subjects.

Important Note:

1) If a subject or subject combination is oversubscribed, students will be selected based on academic merit. Please see section on Merit Based Allocation. (opens in new tab)

2) In the event that there is insufficient subscription for a particular subject or subject combination, the college reserves the right not to offer that subject or subject combination.

S206–S210E combine **H2 Mathematics and H2 Physics** with Economics (S206), Geography (S207), History (S209), Mother Tongue Language & Literature—Chinese, Malay or Tamil (S210), or China Studies in English (S210E). Students choose a different H1 content-based subject from Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Geography, History, Literature in English, or Art. S211 combines **H2 Mathematics and H2 Biology** with Economics. Students choose a different H1 content-based subject from Chemistry, Physics, Geography, History, Literature in English, or Art. S215 combines **H2 Chemistry and H2 Biology** with Economics, with **H1 Mathematics**. The final two combinations pair **H2 Mathematics and H2 Art** with Chemistry (S219) or Physics (S220). For S219, students choose a different H1 content-based subject from Physics, Biology, Economics, Geography, History, or Literature in English. For S220, students choose a different H1 content-based subject from Chemistry, Biology, Economics, Geography, History, or Literature in English.

A405 combines **H2 Economics and H2 Literature in English** with Mother Tongue Language & Literature. A406E combines **H2 Literature in English and H2 Geography** with China Studies in English. A407–A407E combine **H2 Literature in English and H2 History** with Mother Tongue Language & Literature (A407) or China Studies in English (A407E). A408, A410 and A412 combine **H2 Art and H2 Economics** with Geography, History and Literature in English respectively. Students taking a 3H2 Humanities and Arts combination choose one **H1 content-based subject from Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry or Physics**. Students opting for **A401 to A412 are strongly encouraged to offer H1 Mathematics**, which is designed to provide the mathematical foundation needed for Social Sciences and Business courses at university.

4H2 Subject Combinations

Students who wish to opt for 4H2 subjects MUST have attained L1R5 (excludes bonus points) of 12 points or less.

This L1R5 aggregate score MUST include strong O-Level grades in the relevant subjects offered.

Students who are eligible and keen to take a 4H2 subject combination must still indicate a 3H2 subject combination as one of their choices during subject registration.

Students may continue with four H2 subjects in JC2 if they obtain ‘C’ grade or better in all their H2 subjects in the JC1 Promotional Examination.

H3 Subjects

Designed for outstanding students who have excelled academically, H3 subjects are offered to students after the JC1 Promotional Examinations. For students who would like to opt for a H3 subject, they MUST have offered it as a H2 subject.

Students must also demonstrate ability and passion for a particular subject and prove that they are able to manage the workload beyond the usual combination of subjects.

Students will be recommended to take up H3 subjects based on their outstanding performance in all JC1 tests and examinations. In addition, recommendations by subject tutors on students’ passion and flair for the subject at the H2 level will be taken into consideration.
